The first thing I noticed when I opened MT5 today was the sheer resilience of gold just below a major round number. After a steady climb, we are sitting at a critical juncture. The overall tone feels highly constructive, but as a day trader, I am looking closely at whether this momentum has the legs to carry us through the upcoming US session or if we are due for a brief pause to catch our breath.
Opening
As we get moving in the European session this Monday, spot gold (XAU/USD) is trading with a clear bullish bias, hovering just shy of the $4,400 mark at $4,399.44, which represents a 0.52% gain for the day. Meanwhile, looking at Gold Futures (GC), the price has pushed higher to test the $4,455 region. The buyers are firmly in control of the tape right now.
Fundamental Landscape
My reading of the fundamental landscape today is that gold is being heavily supported by a softening US Dollar. The Dollar Index Futures (DXY) have slipped below the critical 100 level, currently trading at 99.239. This inverse relationship is doing the heavy lifting for gold today.
Over the weekend, the broader market narrative shifted heavily towards central bank easing. Following a string of soft US retail data, the markets are aggressively paring back Federal Reserve rate hike risks. Furthermore, I cannot ignore the geopolitical backdrop; headlines pointing to the Iran war keeping energy risks elevated are ensuring that the safe-haven premium remains firmly baked into gold prices.
Asia & Europe Sessions
Throughout the Asian session, gold found solid footing, recovering from minor weekend gaps. As London opened, I saw a steady influx of volume that pushed the price higher. The European session is clearly riding the momentum generated overnight, with equities ticking higher and non-yielding assets like gold remaining highly attractive to early session buyers.
Technical Analysis
When I analyse the multi-timeframe charts, the outlook remains overwhelmingly positive. On the H4 and Daily timeframes, I see a clear uptrend with the price consolidating near recent historical peaks. The weekly chart shows a robust recovery phase where buyers are consistently stepping in at higher lows.
However, I am remaining slightly cautious on the intraday charts. When looking at the M30 and H1 timeframes, I can spot clear signs of MACD divergence. To me, this suggests that short-term momentum could be exhausted, and we might see price action stall before making its next major leg up. The monthly timeframe remains neutral, but everything from the 30-minute to the weekly is flashing strong buy signals based on my moving average alignments.
Key Levels
Here are the specific levels I am watching on my charts today:
- Resistance 1: $4,400 – This is the immediate psychological ceiling for spot gold. A firm break here opens the door for fresh highs.
- Resistance 2: $4,456 – On the futures side, this is the zone where price action has recently consolidated.
- Support 1: $4,376 – Today’s opening price, which should act as a minor floor if intraday sellers take control.
- Support 2: $4,367 – Today’s current low. If we break below this, my short-term bullish thesis might need a rapid reassessment.
My Gold Outlook Today
My primary scenario for today is bullish. The path of least resistance appears to be to the upside, driven by the sub-100 US Dollar and elevated geopolitical risks. However, my alternative scenario accounts for the M30 MACD divergence. If we fail to break $4,400 cleanly, I expect a sideways consolidation or a minor pullback to test the daily open. The bullish case strengthens if we see a high-volume, 1-hour candle close above the $4,400 barrier.
What I’m Watching Today
Today is a relatively quiet start to the week, but I have set alerts for a few key US data releases that could drive volatility later in the afternoon:
- 14:30 BST: US NY Empire State Manufacturing Index (I am watching for a drop to the forecasted 10.60).
- 16:00 BST: US NAHB Housing Market Index (Forecasted at 33).
- 22:00 BST: US TIC Net Long-Term Transactions.
